Skymatics complete drone survey of Killingholme Port.
The Challenge.
Skymatics were tasked to survey Killingholme Port in North Lincolnshire. Providing an up-to-date site wide aerial image and point cloud survey data for future use.
The Solution.
An extremely busy port that runs 24 hours a day. With nearly 500 acres to survey, after receiving our OSC for enhanced drone permissions to fly EVLOS up to 1.5km from the remote pilot, this job became a lot easier! With careful pre flight planning, coordinating our movements and proposed flight path with Humberside ATC with two separate take-off and landing zones, we were good to safely complete the flight. A network of ground control points and independent check points were installed the day before by one of our surveyors to provide and verify our survey grade data.
After just under two hours of flight time, the drone flight was complete. The prevailing offshore winds meant we exhausted seven sets of TB60 batteries to complete the flight. Two strategically placed forward-observers meant that the DJI M300 was efficently operating up to 1.2km away.
The Results.
With 3749 45mp drone images to process into a multitude of exciting deliverables, our technical manager had his processing work cut out for the next couple of days! The high and low res aerial images and point cloud data were geo-rectified, clipped and cleaned to produce a tidy data set that we were proud to deliver to the client. The DJI M300 drone performed like a champ throughout the project and we’re excited to send it off on it’s next mission!
